Hankook Driver Tanner Foust Finishes First at Irwindale, Second Overall in Final Formula Drift Championship Standings
Foust Says Hankook Tires Provided Advantage Through Out Season
WAYNE, N.J., October 13, 2010 - Hankook driver Tanner Foust placed first in the final event of the 2010 Formula Drift season this weekend, secured his first Tires.com Triple Crown bonus prize, and placed second overall in the Formula Drift driver championship standings.
Foust claimed his win at the Round 7: Title Fight in his Rockstar Energy Scion TC before a crowd of more than 12,000 people at the Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, Calif. The finale battle put the two-time Formula Drift champion up against Vaughn Gittin, Jr. After a close One More Time battle, Foust edged out Gittin to take the event victory.
The tires.com Triple Crown is made up of three regular season Formula D events. The driver with the highest combined score from Road Atlanta, Evergreen Speedway and Irwindale Speedway receives a $10,000 cash prize and a custom Fender guitar.
Overall Foust and his team had an outstanding year, delivering a podium finish in five of the seven Drift events this season.
Stephan Papadakis, owner of Papadakis Racing/Tanner Foust, said "Tanner drove excellent and the team had our Scion running perfect. Irwindale is a special place to win with it being the birthplace of U.S. drifting and so many friends, family and sponsors in the stands."
Papadakis attributed the Scion's unrivaled speed to its tires. "The Hankook RS-3 tires allowed Tanner to record most of the fastest runs all year at each track."
As for his take on the tires, Tanner Foust said "Our Hankook tires were an advantage for the entire Formula DRIFT season. When fixing, welding, tuning and pushing every other part of the Rockstar Energy Drink Scion tC, I always knew the Hankook's would be there to bail me out in the clutch moment."
"What a crazy year for drift," said Foust following the race. "We have fought incredibly hard this year in the Rockstar Energy Drink Scion tC just to keep the two championship leaders within sight. There has been a lot of blood and sweat battling it out this year and to finish the season by taking over the number-two spot in the championship and taking an epic win in Irwindale shows the "never quit" attitude of our team."
Hankook's new Ventus R-S3 ultra high performance tires have greater handling capabilities thanks to the latest motorsports technology, which has improved dry-grip performance by 30 percent. Hankook driver Conrad Grunewald, a Formula Drift veteran, earned 12th place in his Hankook Tire Chevrolet Camaro with 295 points. Tanner's score totaled 568.50 points.
"We couldn't be more proud of all our Hankook drivers and the incredible effort they put forth" said Hankook Motorsports Manager Paul Jho. "This is a well-deserved triumph for Tanner, and a gratifying win for Hankook as well."
2010 marks the seventh year for the Formula Drift series, which prides itself on judging races on execution and style, rather than who finishes the course in the fastest time. Fifty-five cars competed in Irwindale for Pro Series and Pro Am together. Livestreaming online, called Driftstream, reached one million unique visitors since the Long Beach event.
Hankook supports motorsports enthusiasts and racers at all levels. This year Hankook offered amateur and professional racing enthusiasts the chance to earn dollars off Hankook's Ventus R-S3 or Ventus Z214 R Compound tires based on their performance in specific racing circuits in the U.S. Racers had an opportunity to earn incentives during each individual competition event.
