Hankook's Sierra Sierra Enterprises Takes Second Overall at the World Time Attack Challenge in Sydney, Australia
Driver David Empringham takes the podium amongst the world's fastest
WAYNE, N.J., May 25, 2010 - Heavy debate has ensued recently online and at various track events as to what car is the world's fastest in Time Attack. The world's best recently went head-to-head and Hankook's Sierra Sierra Enterprises came in second overall at the Time Attack Challenge in Sydney, Australia.
"This is a great achievement for Hankook, U.S. Time Attack racing, and particularly for the team at Sierra Sierra Enterprises," said Jason Kim, motorsports marketing manager, Hankook Tire America Corp. "For the first time, a U.S. time attack vehicle has stood toe-to-toe with the powerhouse teams from Japan."
Eastern Creek International Raceway was the site of this past weekend's showdown, with more than 50 teams taking to the Australia track to battle it out. Officially, this was the first opportunity for Japan's best to take on the best from the United States and Australia.
Flying the banner for the United States was Hankook's own Sierra Sierra Enterprises and its monster EVO 8 with driver David Empringham. As expected, many of the top Japanese tuning companies also had their vehicles primed for the weekend and were expected to rule the podium.
The first day Empringham piloted the Mitsubishi to the quickest lap, much to the surprise of the many onlookers and media that crowded the event. The Sierra Sierra Enterprises team knew that the competition was far from over and busted their knuckles throughout the night to continue to coax every last second out of the EVO 8.
Competition was strong early Saturday as teams from Japan stormed the track, laying down quick time after quick time. Sierra Sierra's Empringham took to the track with a sticky set of Hankook Ventus R-compound tires and posted what was at the time the lowest lap time of 1:31.884.
In the waning moments of the competition world-famous driver Tarzan Yamada drove the CyberEvo to an incredible 1:30.587, taking the top spot and overall event win.
Hankook Tire America Corp. has competed in time attack racing since 2007 as a way to expose grassroots drivers and fans alike to its tires.
This year Hankook is offering amateur and professional racing enthusiasts the chance to earn dollars off Hankook's Ventus R-S3 or Ventus Z214 R Compound tires based on their performance in specific racing circuits in the U.S. Racers have an opportunity to earn incentives during each individual competition event. Interested competitors can learn more about this grassroots program at Hankooktireusa.com or contact Hankook directly at Motorsports@hankooktireusa.com.
The Sierra Sierra Enterprises team will resume competition in the U.S. in May at Willow Springs International Motorsports Park in California.
