Hankook Driver Ryuji Miki Takes Third at Formula Drift Sonoma

Hankook Tire on the Podium During Five Out of Six Formula Drift Events

WAYNE, N.J. Aug. 31, 2009 - Hankook Tire America Corp. was once again represented on the podium at Formula Drift Round 6: Locked and Loaded at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Ryuji Miki piloted his APEXi / Hankook Mazda RX-7 past fellow Hankook driver and defending FD champ Tanner Foust in an epic third place battle that gave Hankook its fifth podium appearance this season, as well as a podium finish in three consecutive competitions.

Formula Drift Round 6: Locked and Loaded was also the first event in Formula Drift history to share the race weekend with the IndyCar series at the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma, which saw the Hankook team sharing the same track as IndyCar drivers Scott Dixon, Helio Castroneves, Danica Patrick, and Marco Andretti. This provided a unique opportunity for tens of thousands of fans to experience both drifting and open wheel racing in the same weekend.

With all four Hankook drivers qualifying for the Top 32, it was Miki and Foust that burned their way through the brackets, each suffering a very close defeat in the Final Four. This set up a tremendous rematch of their epic final from Round 4 in Las Vegas where Tanner Foust came out the winner. This time however it was Ryuji Miki that bested Foust, though it took not only one but two “One More Times” to get the well-deserved champagne.

“I am so happy. It was a great result for my team and my sponsors,” said Miki. “The Hankook Ventus R-S3’s had such all-around grip the entire weekend. It was just what I needed to have a shot at the podium.”

Hankook drivers Tanner Foust, Robbie Nishida and Ryuji Miki all still have a legitimate shot at the top spot. One final event remains. The battle for the points championship will be decided at the “House of Drift” October 15-16 in Irwindale, Calif.
