Hankook Employee Wins $1 Million for a “Ringer”
WAYNE, NEW JERSEY, March 25, 2008 - “The drinks are on me!” said Hankook Tire warehouse manager John Placzankis after recovering from the shock of tossing a perfect horseshoe for the $1 million prize.
A crowd of 15,660 watched as Placzankis, 41, and four other finalists competed in Santa Anita’s St. Patrick’s Day Horseshoe Pitch contest on Saturday, March 15, in Santa Anita, Calif.
After the winning toss, Placzankis was asked what he was thinking moments before he let go: “I was just trying to relax. I’m pretty calm and I was actually just trying to throw it like a softball…and I didn’t want to go over the line.” In addition, he said, “I probably hadn’t done it [horseshoes] in like 30 years.”
Hankook Tire America Corp., manufacturer of ultra-high performance passenger, SUV, truck and bus tires, has a distribution facility in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., where Placzankis works.
“We are certainly happy to see one of our own win such a lofty prize,” said Bill Bainbridge, Hankook director of brand communication. “Our wish is that John will enjoy his winnings and that we hear more of our hard working employees in this type of situation.”
