Carolina RallySport Back in the Championship with Win in Colorado

WAYNE, N.J, (Sept. 27, 2007) - The Carolina RallySport team of driver Matthew Johnson and co-driver Jeremy Wimpey earned a convincing win in their Hankook Tire Subaru at Rally Colorado to keep their Rally America Production GT national championship hopes alive. With an excellent run on the fast and tricky mountain roads, Johnson and Wimpey won the PGT class in the eighth round of the 2007 Rally America championship. Rally Colorado took place on Sept. 22 and 23 near the scenic ski town of Steamboat Springs, Colo.

However the race was not all smooth sailing for the Carolina RallySport team. The team lost third gear during the pre-rally press stage. But in a demonstration of true rally spirit and the camaraderie between rivals, Johnson’s closest competitors helped make the necessary repairs. After locating a new gearbox in Boulder, Colo. the Flatirons Tuning rally team brought the needed supplies to Steamboat Springs and crew members from the Patrick Moro and Tim Penasack teams helped get the car ready for Saturday’s rally.

“I would like to thank Scott Crouch and the Flatirons Tuning rally team for helping with the gearbox repair and handling the repairs from my Ojibwe roll,” Johnson said. “The rally started off well with our team trading second place with Verdier. After the day one re-seed, Verdier pulled over on the Middle Cog Road with an apparent mechanical problem.”

Before the rally, Johnson and Wimpey were tied for second in the championship with the Flatirons Tuning Rally Team of Stephan Verdier and Scott Crouch. But while the Carolina RallySport team would go on for the victory, the y-pipe failure of the Flatirons team made them fade to fourth in class at the end of the rally. Going into the final round of the championship, Moro has 108 points, Johnson has 91, and Verdier has 81 points.

“We can still pull off the PGT championship if we win at LSPR and Pat Moro finishes third or lower,” Johnson said. “If we win and they are second, we lose the championship by a couple points. If we win and they are third, we win the championship by a point.”

The next event for the Carolina RallySport team will be the season-ending Lake Superior Rally, based in Houghton on Michigan’s picturesque upper peninsula. The event will take place on Oct. 26 and 27. Information about the event can be found at http://www.lsprorally.com.
