Hankook-Sponsored Driver Dominates Second Race of 2007 SCCA Club Racing Season
Joel Lipperini, Three-Time National Champion Goes Two for Two in a BACKUP Car
WAYNE, NJ (JUNE 06, 2007) - Hankook Driver Joel Lipperini won the second race of the SCCA season at the Nelson Ledges track in Ohio. Lipperini, competing in the SCC (Showroom Stock C) class took first place after running a hard fought race in a backup Honda Civic Si due to a mechanical failure with his Mazdaspeed Miata.
With no time previously behind the wheel of this backup Civic Si, Joel was concerned how the car would perform. Armed only with two seasons worth of race notes, Lipperini’s team prepped the car to compete. With little time left before the first qualifying session, the crew rolled the backup car out onto the grid. From the opening qualifying session, Lipperini grabbed the pole position in class beating out the competition by over a full second.
Joel’s first place qualifying time was within a few hundredths of a second of his previous track record set in 2006 in the primary SSC car. Unfortunately in the second qualifying round, the backup Si succumbed to the same transmission issues troubling his primary car.
With no time to fix a damaged transmission, the team rolled the car towards the starting line.
“I was confident that the transmission would hold together but knew that any chance of a record run was out the window,” said Lipperini. “Since I couldn’t rely on my transmission, I knew how well my tires performed would be even more crucial than ever. Thankfully, I use Hankook,” concluded Lipperini.
After the drop of the green flag, Joel successfully defended his lead on lap one through turns one, two, and three. Lipperini over-slowed entering turn four, causing the second place car to lose momentum. Leading out onto the back straightaway, Hankook teammate Sam Ryan was able to get a run on the competition and slid in into second place behind Lipperini. From that point forward Lipperini stretched his first place lead to over 20 seconds.
At the checkered flag it was Hankook teammates Lipperini and Ryan in first and second place, respectively.
“This was a great weekend for our team. We proved that even on a backup car, the Hankook Z214 C50 tire could take up the slack and put us in the winner’s circle. I’d like to thank Hankook Teammate John Costello for providing us with a backup car. This enabled us to grab our second National win of the season,” said Lipperini.
